Kampong Speu Paddy Rice

Farmers in Kampong Speu province cultivate several paddy rice varieties such as Bonlar Phdao, Neang Khun, Neang Mliss, IR, and Jasmine rice. The highest price is paid for Jasmine paddy rice.

  • Production size: Cultivation area is 110,000 ha, yields are 256,850 tons per year (average output is 2,235 tons/ha). Kampong Speu produces a surplus of white rice amounting to 33,000 tons available for export.
  • Rice mills: There are 48 rice mills, 17 of these mills have formed a rice millers association.
  • Market: Kampong Speu, Kok Kong, Phnom Penh and export to Vietnam
  • Harvest time: October to January

Palm Sugar

Palm trees (in Khmer: Doeum Thnourt) can be seen all over Cambodia since ancient times. Palm trees provide various benefits to Cambodian people including stems, leaves, trunks, fruits and flowers. The famous palm juice has a good smell and flavor.

Many palm trees have been cut in recent years as high land prices urges farmers to give up this traditional business. Based on existing data about 558,789 palm trees in Kampong Speu are left, 311,132 of these trees are used commercial

  • Production: Output is about 12,445 tons of palm sugar per year (30-40 kg of sugar/tree/year).
  • Producers: Families businesses, mostly in the districts of Samrong Tong, Orh Dong, Chbar Mon, and Thnale Tor Teoung
  • Market: Koh Kong and Phnom Penh
  • Harvest time: December to May
