The coconut palm is grown throughout the tropical world. Coconut trees are also growing at numerous places in Cambodia, however, most of them can be found in the South Eastern part of the country. Coconut trees, stems and leaves provide various benefits for Cambodian people, for instance as decoration or many culinary and non-culinary uses. Virtually every part of the coconut palm provides opportunities for human uses.
Fish is an important food for Cambodian people since the ancient time. Cambodia is known as one of the largest fish producers in the world, especially with regard to fresh water fish grown in rivers, ponds and lakes. Today, the size of fish production has declined due to the increasing number of fishermen in recent years. Many larger fish species have declined while at the same time the smaller fish species dominate the catch. It is the objective of setting up aquaculture systems in Cambodia to refill this gap to have a sustainable fish supply. Currently, in Takeo province there are 17 fish farms that have been created under the assistance of the Ministry of Agriculture Fishery and Forestry. Fish farm owners have formed a fish farmer community in order to facilitate the support from developing partners.
Takeo was the largest silk producer in the past according a survey of the main silk producers located in Som Rong district, Barty district, Prey Karbas and Mongkol Borey district. The four main silk producing districts developed very fast in recent years under technical support from developing partners. Silk producers in 11 villages of Barty and Somrong district have formed the Takeo Silk Producer Community in order to facilitate technical assistance from various institutions.
